Bleeding hearts should be divided in the spring. Just dig it up and cut through the roots to break the plant into two or three plants. Usually people use their shovels to break the root apart. Then plant each new plant division as a new plant. If the center of the plant is dieing, as sometimes happens with perennials, then cut the center portion of the root out and discard it.
