shade tree without huge roots and not messy

I recently purchased a home with a huge hybrid poplar tree in the front yard. The roots are huge and bulge up through the ground. Because there are gas lines and water lines in the same area, I am going to have this tree removed. I do not want another poplar tree as this was was very, very messy prior to the leaves opening. Can you suggest a shade tree whereby the roots won't interfere with the water and gas lines, will grow fairly quickly and provide shade?
