Moss as ground cover instead of grass

Over the years my shaded backyard lawn has deteriorated due to shade, drought, runoff, etc. A beautiful thick green moss has developed under a cherry tree and after the last winter and this spring's moisture, the moss has now begun to expand into the grassy, barren areas. I have a small lawn in the back which borders a wooded area protected from development by the township. I just don't want to fuss and I want a naturalized habitat but with character. Any drawbacks going from grass to a moss ground cover? Thanks
