Low shrubs for North/North East exposure

Have a new home and want to establish low shrubs around the foundation. The side of the house is North/Northeast. What puzzles me is that it appears to be in full shade during winter and spring. But I have been told that it will get sun during the summer. Does anyone have suggestions for shrubs that will tolerate shade for at least half the year, and sun in the summer? I would like to have something with either berries or possibly flowers. It will have good drainage, but I can keep it well watered. I bought Carissa Holly thinking it would do well there, but now I am not sure. Thank you for any suggestions.
